bought a 5 pound bag of butter reds – they were dark green under the skin – is this normal? i peeled the green away – i am still alive – please respond. thank you
Hi,
No, that is not normal and you did the right thing by peeling the green part off. Those potatoes are fresh harvested, which is usually a good thing, but during this time they are also the most delicate. It sounds like the potatoes you bought were exposed to too much light, probably from not rotating the stock in the store. Light, especially fluorescent light will turn potatoes green, especially lighter potatoes, like yellows but eventually, all varieties turn green. The potatoes are still good for consumption, but the green part will taste bitter.

I recently found these fabulous potatoes in my local Food Lion. There aren’t sufficient words to describe how incredibly good these potatoes are! I am a potato fiend in general, but these are the best! They truly are a red potato, but with the texture and flavor of a golden. I hope my store continues to carry these!

Thank you so much for your kind words. We are constantly testing new varieties to make sure we sell the best tasting varieties available. This particular variety originated in Holland and we have been the only company in the US to make them available here.
We are very proud of that fact. I also would like to let you know that as a customer you have a lot of power. If you are looking for a particular item in the store and they don’t carry it, just ask the produce manager to bring it in, many times they will just do that.

Unfortunately, we already sold all Butter Reds for this season. They will be available again in October. Our Rustics are now called Butter Russets (another great choice) should be available at Brookshire Brothers or Brookshire Grocery.

Bought a 5 lb bag of butter reds. These are the best potatoes I have ever had, every single one was as good as the one before. Love them, but I am sorry to say I don’t remember where I bought them.

Hi Tom,
Our Butter Reds are similar to Roosters, as they are red potatoes with yellow flesh. While they are similar, the varieties are different – we use Mozart variety. It is a Dutch variety, we have been packing for the last three years.
We continually test new varieties for taste, texture and appearance, I would love to hear what you think how our Butter Reds stack up to the Rooster.
